About this event

Many non-Indigenous Canadians have never heard of The Sixties Scoop, but for Sharon Gladue it meant growing up disconnected from her family and culture and it has had lasting impacts on her life and continues to influence her life work.

The “Sixties Scoop” refers to the large-scale removal or “scooping” of Indigenous children from their homes, communities and families of birth from the 1960s through the 1980s, and their subsequent adoption into predominantly non-Indigenous, middle-class families across Canada and the USA.

In May 2018, Alberta Premier Rachel Notley apologized to Alberta’s Sixties Scoop survivors in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta: “For the government practice that left you, Indigenous people, estranged from your families and your communities and your history, we are sorry. For the government practice that left you, Indigenous people, estranged from your families and your communities and your history, we are sorry. For this trauma, this pain, this suffering, alienation and sadness, we are sorry. To all of you, I am sorry.” Prior to the government’s apology, Children’s Services and Indigenous Relations ministries, working together with the Sixties Scoop Indigenous Society of Alberta (SSISA), held consultations across the province with Sixties Scoop survivors and Indigenous leaders.

We will be joined by guest speaker, Sharon Gladue, former Professional Consultant at the Sixties Scoop Indigenous Society of Alberta (SSISA) who will share her story and her work as a support for others who have went through the 60’s Scoop and to mentor those families who were and are still impacted by the Child Welfare System. Sharon believes that educating mainstream Canadians on the atrocities of the 60’s Scoop will shed light on the historical factors that happened to the Indigenous Peoples in Canada. Sharon dedicates her work to her children, her grand-children and to all those who are affected by the Child Welfare System.
